  • My battery won't recharge!?

    Hey guys,

I fabricated Side covers out of sheet metal for my 1978 xs11 standard. My starter relay contacted the metal and some of my wiring burnt up, all have since been replaced...

I charged up my battery and the bike started, took it for a spin, everything seemed fine. This said, I only got a few more starts out of the charge... unless I go for a very long ride... still, the starter isn't cytcling as fast as it used to. I've been bump starting my bike, but am getting tired of it...

do these bikes have alternators or generators or something else? did I seriously fry my bike? any body got a kick start pedal for sale?

There is a stator/ alternator on the right side of the engine.

While running, see if there is any output voltage. Also get an owners manual it will help out

Did you check the altrenator connections that are behind the plate the starter solenoid is mounted to? It is quite possible you burnt into one of those or its wires. This would give you some problems running though and it seems like you do not have running issues. Otherwise you could have hurt the battery?

Measure the battery voltage. If the batt is fully charged it should read about 13.2 volts.Start the bike rev and hold rpm 2000-2500 it should measure around 14-17 volts. If the battery voltage is low before you start the bike but rises properly when the bike is running, the battery is probably damaged. If the battery tests ok after being charged but the voltage doesn't rise while the bike is running suspect the rectifier/regulator. Is the Tach working? If it is then battery should be charging. Also take a thin feeler gauge and hold it close to right side cover(alternator)Turn key to on position.Should be like a magnet and stick to cover.Wont be super strong but you should feel it.This is from the tech tip section of the forum.
