  • gas tank lock and key - anyone have a spare?

    Hello everyone,

My xs11 has been treating me well for a long time. I haven't had to come asking questions for awhile. Of course, I haven't been riding very much.

My gas tank lock ... broke ... I leaned on the chrome assembly and the whole thing popped upwards. The two flimsy screws on the bottom side that attach into the square lock assembly are stripped.

I guess it's time for a new gas tank lock assembly or a key made for my spare tank.

    Anybody have any spares?

I'll check on getting a key next week when the shops reopen.

I always take the locks apart and remove the tumblers. What use is a locking gas cap on a bike where you can pop a fuel line off and drain the tank.

This might be a dumb question but then what do you do about opening it? What about looks? Do you put a button of some sort there? Mine works fine for now but I'm certainly not in love with the lock. Garry

It looks the same but you can open it with any Yamaha key.

good point geezer. how difficult is it to remove the tumblers? I've never had a lock apart before.

My concern is not so much that people can drain the gas from my petcocks, but that someone could pour something into my tank without me knowing about it, and mess up my engine!! Remember the ole sugar in the gas tank prank?! OUCH!!! I'll keep mine locked, thankyou.

              Just my 2 cents....T.C.

In over 30 years of riding, no one has ever put anything in my tank. I have had a bike vandalized but they left the gas tank alone. These days I have an alarm, I don't know if it's good for much but it keeps the honest people honest.

BTW, for many years brand K and some brand H bikes had no tumblers in the gas cap locks and could be opened with any key.
