whats up? I was just given a 1980 xs 1100 model SG. it had been in a basement for about 3 years. I have since replaced the carbs ;,,condensation
rusted all the linkage, could not get it to free up. also cleaned out gas tank
among other things plus a new battery. was told i needed a new ignition
unit, it has a spark but very weak. it wants to start but wont.
new to xs11s any help would be greatly appreciated!

Did you rebuild the carbs or were they off a running bike?If your battery doesnt have at least 10.4 volts you will have weak spark and it wont want to start.
If your battery is good then maybe coils are weak?
You can jump start it with a car and see if it will start.If it starts, your battery is low or no good.
You would also be ahead of the game if you ran a compression check so you know what your working with.

The ignition unit just tells the coils when to fire. How hot the spark is is determined by the condition of the coils and the power supplied to them through the red/white wires.
