If that wheel is a 17 inch, its a standard wheel and you have the wrong spacer between the wheel and the caliper bracket

it is standard as far as i know, if i sit the caliber on with out break shoes there is almost twice the room on the piston side as compared with the other side....might explain why the shoes were worn that way, thnx ivan i will see if my manual lists the proper spacer and size

I think what he's asking or trying to show.. is the weird brake pads the XJ has on the rear. They come angled like that brand new. If you operate the brake pedal with your hand after they are on, you will see how they work and understand why they built them that way.

Ivan... read better instead of just looking at the pretty pics... XJ1100. They didn't make too many standard or special XJ versions.. the wheels are 16" though.

Yeah, the rear MNS pads are made that way too. The floating caliper angles into the rotor. Not sure of the benefit, but it makes it hard to figure out which pads you need when you try to buy new ones!

Sure looks to me like you've got a brake pad that is meant for the front cailpers of a Special or XJ. They're bevelled that way right from the get-go.

Can you take another shot or two showing the entire rear caliper, from just s bit further back and a bit more to the right side. I'm pretty sure it should look the same as the rear caliper on all of the other models.

Like Tod said, the XJ11 uses the same caliper and pads as the R/F of a Special, and it should have the tapered pads. It is not the same as the rear caliper on any other XS11.

Not so fast. The '81 MNS uses the same setup. The brake pads are even the same part number (4W1-W0046-00-00).

The front pads on the '81 MNS are all flat (no beveling) for both sides too, just like the XJ (also same part number - 4W1-W0045-00-00).

                      wierd brake pads

I have an 82 xj11 and mine are that way too, I read somwhere, on this site possibly, about a strange angle on rear. It seems a odd way to make the bike but at least they put discs on the rear rather than shoes like other yams.

I've never noticed this before, but I had a look at my XJ shop manual this morning and there it was! Angled pads on the rear. Sure makes me glad my fleet is Standards, Special, and an early Midnight Special.

I have a special and there is a thread here somewhere from when I rebuilt my front brakes. I asked what in the halibut could cause them to wear like that??? Of course the answer was, the factory, they look brand new!!
