  • a drill is running inside my engine

I was riding the newly aquired special this afternoon, when a whining sound started inside the clutch/transmission area, all of a sudden it stopped, and I thought maybe the starter had came on then went back off, rode a little further. and it started again, and didn't stop, it sounds kind of like a drill running, but not quiet as loud, the engine was very hot all over, any ideas, I don't have a clue. Thanks 'Dog

Need more info. Does the noise occur when you are stopped/moving/both?

Does it change with engine speed, or if you have the clutch in or out?

Is your oil up to the marks? Any other symptoms happening coincidentally?
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

It does it moving or stopped. dosn't change with engine speed, does it if clutch is in or out. oil is full. Not smoking. Running 4 into 1 exhaust. Thanks for the reply, It ran good, motor felt tight, as in not many miles, supposedly there were only 18,000 on it when I bought it, no speedo, no front forks
when I bought it, no clutch. Later 'Dog

Does the noise change with bike speed at all? Is it definitely in the cases, is it closer to the rear of the bike like middel drive area?

almost sounds like a bearing to me, but I do not know nay that woudl not be effected by any of the factors mentioned.

It didn't seem to change with bike speed. it sounds like it's between the middle drive and the starter. but closer to the starter. Thanks 'Dog

            Dog,
Check/Change your middle drive fluids!! Although if it does it when stopped that may not be the problem however there have been a good many of the middle drives that suddenly stopped working with near disasterous results. Check your engine mounts and exhaust piping also. I just spent two days trying to track down a "bearing noise" on my XJ650 only to find out that the noise was a slighly loose heat deflector shield touching the frame. I would have sworn that noise was a bad bearing or cam chain going out!!

Another thing you can check easy. Pull the starter and check the starter sprag clutch. The part were the starter spline goes into the gear should turn smoothly one way and not turn the other way. If it dose not turn smoothly you could have a clutch hanging up and taking the starter for a spin at an rpm it was not designed to tolerate. Open the starter up and look at the internal planetary gears. If they are damaged and show signs of bluing or overheat you have found your issue. Worst case is if the clutch is damaged. That's a case split to replace. Hope is something simple

PROBLEM SOLVED! Got a surprise this morning, went out to crank the bike, turn key, and the starter was trying to crank the engine, turn key off, turned it bike on, it started turning again, freed up sticky switch, now the starter's working fine, bikes running great. Thanks for the replys, and help. later 'Dog

Glad it was that simple! Hope the starter has not been damaged to any extent.
