  • Dig my new 82 XJ1100 - can't ride it :^(

Hi all - proud owner of '82 XJ1100J as of a week ago. Haven't had much of a chance to ride it yet, though...

I noticed the throttle didn't return to idle very well when I released it - it felt sort of "sticky." I consulted the service manual the previous owner sold me with the bike, unscrewed the twist grip housing and pulled it off the handlebar - there was some fine surface rust underneath that I was able to easily remove (and cleaned the inside of the twist grip and lubed the cable just like it said to in the manual.) Unfortunately, when I went to put it back together, I found out that the other end of the cable had come undone from the carbs. To get at the throttle lever where it connects, I had to pull the seat and tank and use a really long needle-nose plier to get it reconnected. As I was doing that, I noticed that the little lever didn't seem to have much, if any, spring to it (to pull back the cable and return the throttle to idle.) Have I broken a return spring or done something out of order? Can anyone help with this? I'd really like to get this fantastic bike back on the road - I'd really appreciate it! ~Phil

I'm definately not the carb guy here, but just to make sure of a few things. If the cable is off of the carbs, you shouldn't have to remove everything to get to it.. but it will make it easier. If you look in there where the little barbell end of the cable goes into that little bracket, you should be able to push up on that with your finger.. feel the spring tension.. then have it snap shut when you release it.

Another thing to mention, is that once you install the barbell end, the cable sleeve must go up into it's holder. There's a slotted bracket with a small cup on top that you pull up on the cable and spring together, guide the cable through that slot, and drop the end down into to the little cup to hold it.

Others will have some ideas.. but if the throttle grip feels smooth and the cable slides back and forth in the sleeve well.. and the spring on the carbs still has tension... I don't know. lol.

You might tell what part of Oregon you're from.. people may be able to come by and help you. It may cost you a meal and possibly some liquid refreshment though..

      duhhh, Phil

Geez, Tod. You'd think even a guy from Salem would have figured this one out...the little floppy thing is just where the cable connects to the carburetor butterfly GANG lever for FOUR carburetors EUREKA!!. Anyhoo, combo your advice and a little Plan B, Phil's rockin' with the 1100J and it's a total rocket on the docket!!! Thanks, dude.

Hey!! And only a month to figure this out!

Glad you got it going and got another one back on the roads. I have some family (Or at least the wife does) out in that little one horse town of Turner next to you. Grew up in Washington and been through there a ton of times..

        Congrats again.
