They are 99% the same, and interchangable. I think the Special carbs use different emulsion tubes on 2 & 3, but nothing you would have to swap out or worry about.

The offset of the choke lever is different between the two also. The handle on the Standard carbs is toward the front, and the Special is to the rear. The Special also has chrome diaphram covers.

Ok, that tells me that my 80 standard has special carbs as the choke lever is to the rear of the choke rod and the diaphram covers are chromed. Hmm, and here I thought it was pretty much all stock, so much for the not having some level of a frankenbike.

Just to add... the 78-79 Std. and 79 Spec. carbs (series II) have the thicker polished aluminum diaphram covers as opposed to the 80-81 Std. and Spec. (series III) carbs which have the thinner (chrome 1 & 4) tops.

Choke levers on the special are chrome, standards are not.
Every special I've seen had the choke lever/handle in FRONT of the choke rod and standards BEHIND the rod.

Ok, that puts me back to thinking I don't have a frankenbike. It's a bit confusing as some keep saying that the choke lever is to the front on standards, but my diaphram caps are thin, not thick.

                Strange

I bought a 78E and the choke handle was to the front, and my 80SG's original carbs had the handle to the rear. WK's Special had the handle to the rear. Looking at Yamamama's parts breakdown, I see the handle to the rear on standards, and to the front on Specials.

Certainly I am no expert, I have only worked on mine and a very little bit on EGleaves (helped pull them was about it) both are specials. My bike has proven to be very much bone stock to date. A few things have been painted out black that were aluminum, but all parts seem to be original save the seat. My choke lever handle is to the front of the bike.
