Having a hard time removing the cylinder block. Can I remove the studs to make it easier? Are they easy to remove or will they break?

That will help. Spray PB blaster down all the stud holes, let it sit. A pipe wrench (monkey) should take 'em out. I've never had one snap, but I guess it's possible. Then carefully pry at the two points near the front motor mounts. If it's being stubborn still, you can also use a thin bladed screwdriver in between the jugs and the case and work around. All the studs that I've ever removed came out fairly easily after they were broken loose. Although this is not totally necessary.

On an XS750 I rebuilt a few years ago, I had the same problem. It would only come up a little and stop. Turns out, the front cylinder studs had a black plastic sleeve corroded onto them which kept the cylinder from sliding off the studs. I finally broke it up and the cylinder came right off.

Therre are a few threads talking about this problem. One of them is here . Try using various combinations of search works like cylinder, barrel, stuck, remove removal, etc in the search tool. A lot of times, there's a nasty build-up of cr@p around the lower part of the studs that gets so packed-in that it feels like it has welded the whole works together. Lots of penetrating oil spray, lots of work wiith dental picks, and you'll get all that cr@p out and be ready to deal just with a stuck gasket.

I found that using a 1 1/2" putty knife to slide between the case and block worked best. I wasted an hour trying other things.
