  • Just bought a 1980 1100 Midnight Special

Well guys I'm a proud owner of a nice 1980 1100 M.S. and I don't know what to do to it first. I've road it for about 300 miles now and a few things have gone already. Today the cable that goes into the speed ohmmeters feel out, no biggy. But after I scwered that back in I lost power to my horn, turn signals, and tach. I don't know what to do or check, where should I look first?

Also when I shift gears it clunks read hard from a stop position. I want to change all the fluids and I don't know where to start. Are there maintinace books for this bike?

    Thanks,
    Rob

A loud clunk into first gear is NORMAL for this bike, as long as it does not pop out, or slip. You can minimize this buy pulling in the clutch for several seconds before shifting and to make sure you are always at low RPMs. if moving it should go in fairly smoothly.

        Owner's Manual for Download

        Hey Rob,

Go to the LINKS section, scan down the page a bit and you'll find a message subject that says 81SH Owner's Manual, it's a Standard Special, but should apply to your Midnight as well. I'm the one who scanned it and put it up on the FORUM, I've got an 81SH. Those Midnight's are very nice also. You'll want to review the tech tips about cleaning ALL of the electrical connections, the fuse block, and such, make sure you've got a well charged battery. Good luck and ENJOY!!!
