  • New starter button

The starter button on my '78 1100 popped out on me today. Luckily I found it and the spring is still there. I'm able to pop it in and get her started, but I need to replace the button. I searched for starter buttons here and see that a few guys found new ones. Any idea on a good place for this part?

    I see this one https://www.partsnmore.com/cat_index...ory=electrical
Anyone use them? Never mind, $35 minimum order.

    Gonna try these maybe? http://www.freewebs.com/kibokojoe/

Fix - Mikes XS has them. I'm pretty sure the horn button and the starter button are the same. They cost $6, but on orders less than $50 you're going to pay another $7 shipping. For $13 you could probably get the switch from a yamaha dealer or motorcycle shop and avoid the wait.

Thanks, the Yamaha dealer near me opens in 15 minutes, I'll give him a call. The online fiche doesn't list any of the XS bikes, but hopefully they have one.

Fix - I didn't see the button listed separately in the parts fiche, but it's a part that fails often so I'm thinkin' they should have one.

Hmm, the parts guy at my local dealer said it's been discontinued. I'm not sure if he's right, or confused.

I went ahead and ordered the one from mikesxs $13 is worth the hassle of tracking it down...

You can probably stick the old one in with some duct tape till the new one arrives - don't tape it too tight to avoid an always-on situation. I know one member that's got the end of a bic pen taped in place for a starter button. Sounds weird, but it works.

That is the same crap I get from my local Yamaha dealer everytime I stop in there looking for parts. According to them, even the carb needles and seats are "discontinued" but they are more than willing to try to sell me a new bike! Then again the bike is older than most of the guys working in the Yamaha shop!! But I can go to a "back yard" machanic shop and they can almost always find what I need!

The thing is, you can't just go in and tell them what bike you have and say, "I need X part." You have to do the footwork and find the actual OEM part number and hand them that instead. That way, they have to look it up in the computer, and the computer usually has the number listed in the correct capacity (discontinued or not). I always look up the part on the UK site and there is often a picture of it there too.

you guys and your "fancy" repairs...the old light switch from my living room has been working fine for me of course the duct tape where it is fastened to the gas tank in starting to dry out

That's some very valuable info! Thanks for sharing that tip. It oughta be listed on the main page, I think. I'll definitely remember that when the next need arises, cause I have definitely been there too! Tulsa dealers act the same way.

Someone on here was making stainless ones. I think T.C. or XSChop. Sorry I cannot remember who. Someone here probably does though.
