  • Petcocks

I removed the petcocks on my tank to repaint it. When I reinstalled them I noticed that they leak from the bolts holding the petcocks to the tank. It's not really a leak but the head of the bolts are wet with gas. Not really a drip. Not something I want to leave unattended. I made sure not to overtighten. I made sure to check and the rest of the petcocks are dry. The rubber gaskets are good. The bolts have a hex head on them like on the engine side covers. Would these be the original bolts? Were the originals philips head? I'm not sure if the condition existed before I removed the petcocks for painting or not. Any ideas on what I could use as a seal for this problem? Different bolts? Thread sealant?

The originals were phillips head, and there is a fiber washer that goes under the head to seal. Using hex socket heads is OK, I've used them for years. Get new fiber washers and the thread sealant I've had good results with is called 'the right stuff', it's liquid rubber gasket maker comes in a can dispenses like ready-whip, although not as fast! It's pricey but it works.

Thanks! I picked up some Permatex Ultra the gray stuff that says it's fuel resistant. It has some metal washers on them but I'll get the fiber washers, maybe some of the neoprene washers.

It was the washers. Easy fix. Didn't need the Permatex. Thanks!
