I think I have the aftermarket service manual for a 79 xs11. I own an 82 XJ and just need to rebuild the tranny. Will this manual work? Does anyone know for sure that these 2 bikes have the same engine and transmission. Thanks for the help guys.

Everything I have ever read says that the 1100 CC engine is the same from 78-82 (or 84 IIRC in Canuk land).
There are some differences in the XJ bikes in the YICS system and the alternator, and no advance system, its all done in the TCI IIRC, but the tranny is supposed to be the same.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

If you are going to do the tranny, I bet first gear is out! Second gear goes on the XS, first on the XJ. There is a VERY GOOD tech tip here for the transmission fix that does NOT involve replacing gears. If you print out the pages, the transmission is easy, and you DO NOT need to split the cases!
