so i can only come to the assumption that my engine is infact clogged with magic , because that seems to be the only way to explain it .

OK, I will admit it. I gummed up your engine with some bad voodoo. I saw this bike on CL at about 11PM on the day it was listed. I sent the owner an e-mail because it was too late to call. The next evening, I got an e-mail stating that the bike was already sold. I put a curse on the bike. I have just removed the curse and you bike will now run fine.

Everything above is true, except for the voodoo thing. You really scooped that one up fast. Good luck in getting her running like she should. You have already done more with her than I think I could have done.

....just got an e-mail from the place i ordered the synchronizer from , they're out of them . now i'm trying to decide if it's worth it to drop $100 on the carbtune synchronizer , i used to have a friend with one of these and it was pretty sweet . but i'd also have to wait for it to get here from the uk . but now i'm at the point where i have to decide if i'm going to dump money on this bike or get away from it before it costs me a ton of money for nothing .

...i was just looking at the parts diagrams , my bike doesn't have rubber plugs at the end of the pilot jet towers like it says it should .....could that have something to do with this ?

ok , i'm ordering a new set of carb boots , a morgan carbtune , and 4 pilot jet rubber plugs .

I know in the beginning of your thread here I chimed in a bit, and you've probably been wondering where I went since. But I'm still here!
I feel your pain and frustration, but like a wise man once said... "if it were easy, anybody could do it!" And "yeah, it's tough... but it's the tough that makes it great!"
So with all that said (for whatever it's worth)... I've been a mechanic and an electrician all my life. Just recently got back into bikes... so I can't help with a lot of the technical aspects the way others here can, so that's why I stepped back a bit to let the wiser ones make suggestions.
But, whenever I get into a mechanical problem like yours, that no matter what I try, it still eludes me... and I'm about to blow a gasket and give up... I go back to basics. (And I also pray!) You might go through the basics... starting with compression. If you have a stuck or bent valve, not even a perfect carb will function properly. 1) Compression... 2) Fire ...3) Fuel... 4) Timing. Sometimes, ya can't see the forest for the trees, cause you're too close. Been there, done that many times. Wish I was closer... also wish somebody in the XSive brotherhood did too that could give you a hand. Don't give up... it'll be worth it when she sings sweet to you. And it will probably make total sense to you once the mystery gets solved. Hang tough! You'll be amazed how great these things are when they run right!

pick-up coils, check, diaphram, check, gas in carbs, check, cylinder lives when it has fuel, check, the vacuum that opens the diaphram is not working right, which I guess is compression/intake valves. This is all that's in question. Guess you will have to pull the head. Good Luck, Later 'Dog

all cylinders were within 5psi of each other . if i can't get these to work i may get a different set of carbs and try those . my carb boots are all cracked up so i'm going to get new ones .


can anyone verify if there is supposed to be a rubber plug in the end of the pilot jet tower ? if so i'm missing them , i've seen it on some diagrams and not on others .

all of my slides flutter A LOT , but the synchronizer should straighten that out . but the #4 slide moves just as much as the rest of them , so it's not a problem with the slide or vaccuum .

If you have the original SG carbs then no you dont need those rubber plugs.

I just read through this post again.You had the problem in carb 3 first right?
Then you switched jets out of 3 and 4 with each other and now your problem is in carb 4.
Did I read that wrong?

no , it's always been 4 , i just switched the insides with 3 and 4 to make sure it wasn't anything in carb 4 causing the problem .

So is the emulsion tube in that carb the same as the rest?Like does it have the same size holes and the same number of holes?

yes , and the carb #4 emulsion tube is now in carb #3 , #3 still runs , #4 still doesn't . new plugs in all cylinders by the way .

About those carb boots.... that's a common thing, the cracking. But they are a DOUBLE tube... and almost always the insides are fine. So even though they may look cracked up, they're probably ok. Plus, they're expensive. I replaced mine, (thanks to a great friend who bought me a new set and gave them to me!) There are ways of recoating the exteriors to recondition, check the threads. Question... you said the compression was within 5 psi of each other... but you didn't give the readings. What were they? (I assume you thought they were good.) Thanks. Bob

Man, that is frustrating.
I have one other thought.You know that tiny jet in the bottom of the orifice in
the bowl itself.I assume you were able to verify it is clear,it is hard to check that.Even when it is clear the orifice is so tiny barely any air goes through it.
If its clogged though,it can cause problems.
