  • Wobble

I got a 1980 xs1100g. It has the full fairing and saddle bag kit. Tires and balance are in good shape but I got a serious wobble. When I first get on the bike and take off everything is as it would have been in 1980, then 5 miles down the road it feels like I have two flat tires. All the bearings seem to be okay with no shaking. The bike shakes so bad I can hardly hold on to it. Sitting on the side of the road in idle, in gear or out of gear, no problem. Any ideas would be appeciated.
    Jason.

How is the suspension? Are the fork seals leaking oil? When's the last time you changed fork oil? Have you replaced the fork springs? Have you always had the problem or did it start after working on the front wheel?

On the front wheel mounting, on the right side, there should be a clamp that a bolt fits through, make sure the bolt and nut are still there and tight.

A long while ago, I experience extreme wobble only to notice my bolt had fallen out somewhere.

Also check your steering head bearings for proper adjustment (smooth and tight, no play).

I had a "SH" that acted this way. Cleaned and replace the fluid in the front forks to get rid of it.

On the '80-G the front forks are also air assisted. You may want to check for equal/proper air pressure in the forks.
According to my Yamaha Service Manual, when checking the air pres. there should be no weight on the front end. Also it states the following: Min. air pres. = 0 psi, Standard air pres. = 5.7 psi, and believe it or not, Maximum air pres. = 36 psi [Which seems a little high to me]
