Will an original Yamaha fairing and set of hard bags from a "79 std fit on an '81 Special? Will the mounting brackets just swap over, or will it require some fancy adjustments? Trying to determine if it's worth messing with.

I think they will fit all the years and models.
The bag mounts are pretty universal looking. The shock mounts, rear footpeg mounts etc are all the same, as far as i can tell.Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

The fairing mount would be the same, but as I understand it the bag mounts will be slightly different (although I understand that they are easily modified to fit).Cy

Vetter info
FYI: Craig Vetter sold his company in 1978 and his products were sold for several years after... This site has a complete history of the fairings, installation instructions, differences between models, and a parts store with replacement windshields. Also some repair kits to fix cracks.. Good reading!

I fitted a standard 78 hardbag setup to my '79SF.
It wasn't quite plug and play. I ended up removing about a 2" section of the rear crash bars to tighten up the spacing top-to-bottom. I put a metal tube down the center of the bars to join them back together and hid the joint with the split coupling that supports the two bars that wrap the bags on each side. There was also a lot of fussing/ trimming with the black aluminium back-plate that supports the bags on the rear side. I had to do this because I wanted to keep the existing rear luggage rack and back-rest.. Still working on an effective rear signal set-up, but the weather stopped the fun.
It's raining like crazy in NYC today, as soon as the sun comes out I'll post a couple of photographs.
Things may be a bit different for your '81.
Gareth.

bags fitting
I am a beginner but have bought 9 xs11's in past couple of years. I can say what I found on mine in baggers interchanging. All the standards are the same. The specials and the 81 std have the same back crash guard ( piece in front of bags) and the std have the same back crash guards. The bottom hole is about an inch different between the two. I don't want to say anything different than the ones here that have been doing this for years.

Well, my concern is the swap from a '79 std to an '81 special. I know that's 2 years worth of difference, and the change form std to special, So I'm jsut concerned about what all might need to be done to the mounting brackets to make it fit. If it makes any difference, the set is the original Pacifico touring package. Looks much like this:

I don't think any of the Venture sets were ever made for Specials. They were for the standard.
However, there is little or no difference between a special or standard in the areas where these mount, and the setup was made to be 'universal' in that the bracketry has some movement in it.
I am only speaking for Vetter, but since the Pacificos were bought to fill in for the vetter, I assume they allmount pretty much the same.Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

Standecial/ Speciandard Rear bags.
http://picasaweb.google.com/agfitz/X...eat=directlink
Some photographs of my setup. One of them shows the 2" section that I had to remove from the rear crashbars to make them fit between the shock mounting and the exhaust/ foot pedal mount. I believe the originals were designed to be supported by the the shock mount and a threaded hole about a foot further back. I drilled another hole in the aluminium back-plate to level the bags up at this point.
My bike came with the rear rack and back rest as shown. The standard bike had a raised chrome rack with a vetter box attached. The original rack was a little wider than mine at the mounting points and had bracket stand-offs to mount it to the frame. My rack doesn't have the stand-offs, so I had to cut and bend the back mounting plate so that it cleared the lower tubes of "my" rack. You might not have to do this if you are installing the original rear rack.
The original mounting bolts for the shock, pedals and exhaust were long enough in my case to reuse the existing chrome cap nuts, but I had to ditch the thick chrome washer on each side and substiture a thinner fender washer to feel that they were fully secure.
I painted the bags and the tank, side covers etc last week. Just waiting for a little time to flat and polish out the clearcoats and then I will mount them up. As soon as that is done I will post photos of the bike..
I call it the Standecial. Basically a 79 SF with a standard tank and bags. And zrx carbs, gutted airbox to fit around the pods, an oil cooler and a couple of other quirky things..
Hope this helps.
