  • Gas Tanks

I just picked up a 79 XS 11 and I'm trying to find a replacement gas tank. I've had no luck finding one. Does anyone know if there are other tanks that can substitute in? Does anyone know af a supplier for this?

Welcome to the forum, and congrats on the bike. Several people here sell parts (andreas comes to mind) to those of us who are in need. You might just get lucky and find one available here. Be sure to post some pictures when you get some. We like to see the new bikes!

WHy a new tank? Dents can be fixed, rusted spots can be welded, and tanks can be lined.

Just another option for you. But sometimes you can find a whole parts bike for the price of a decent tank or exhaust. So don't forget Craigslist.

Is your '79 a standard or a special? Two different tanks, with slightly different fitment. If you have a standard (square headlight, gauges, turn sigs), the '78-79 standard tanks are the same except for color. The '80-81 standard tanks will also fit, but are styled slightly different. If you have a special (round everything), the '79-80 (and maybe '81; somebody else can chime in) tanks will interchange. You can 'crossbreed' these too, but there's differences in the fuel gauge/light senders and sometimes seat mods are needed.

Good tanks are hard to find, but they are out there....

I can't see any difference between my 80G's original tank (other than the hole in it and the bad paint job from the PO) and the 78 tank I got off ebay. The only thing different was the tank emblems, which pre 80 emblems being styled differently.

Most people don't see the difference, but if you look closely you'll see that the 'knee indent' on the sides isn't the same. On the '78-79 tanks the front edge is curved, the later tanks it's straighter. Subtle, but there is a difference...

Maybe it's the '81-up tanks, but I bought what was represented to me as a '80 tank and that was the change.

                Hi Jer and welcome,
check the parts for sale section on this very list.
Andreas Weiss parts out XS & XJ11s and his ad is usually there along with others.
And pretty please expand your profile? Yours is kinda bleak. Which city you live in and the exact model of your bike can be of great help to folks who may want to help you.
As would a signature line and a reiteration of your bike model.

I just compared my original tank with the 78 tank I bought and the knee indents are exactly the same, so I would guess that the tank you got may have been an 81 tank?
