I have been messing around with my gas tank on my 79 xs11. It had some rust mostly from around the cap where it likes to rust by the hinge . Alot of rust fell into the tank from time to time I'm guessing. This tank was coated inside at some time, and is still working.... I pulled the tank and took out the petcocks out and found no "towers" or what ever the correct name for the submergable part of the petcock is. I called around and found two rebilt petcocks for 120.00 plus shipping. Since I'm not made of money, I decided to make my own..so here's what I did.....I went to discount auto and bought four 5/16 brass quick disconnect unions for nylon lines. This is perfict fit for your prime and on holes that are in the lower part of the petcock. These unions are 3 inches long, almost as long as the submergable stock parts. I used my brass hammer to "press" them into the two holes in the petcock, and fit very tight with out damaging any part of the lower petcocks. Then I took brass screen and wire and connected it to the unions that have disconnect sections that I was able fasten the wire under for a really snug fit. Then put gas in her and put 42 miles of bugs in the teeth and loved every minute of it. But when I got home I notice she was smoking. I just put new ngk bp6es in just before the ride but hav'ent pulled them yet to see what they look like. O'well tomorrow is another day. O'ya all those parts for my new "rebuilt" petcocks were under ten dollers........hope it lasts.

Nice solution buddy!!
Hey,
I'm glad you found a way around those incomplete petcocks. Sounds like a great solution to that issue. That will definitely prevent picking up the debris from the bottom of the tank. BTW, you will soon learn that people around here like to see pictures of things like that, makes it easier to duplicate!!
Awesome.
You mention she was smoking... Was it also skipping or missing? Or otherwise not running smoothly?1980G Standard, Restored

Please, get us some pics. I would like to see this because the fuel system for my fuel injection requires the use of 3 open petcock ports. I have worked this out for now on my special tank, but when I go to the standard tank it is going to be an issue.'81 XS1100 SH
