  • My New Toy, A 79 Special

Just picked this 79 today found it on Kijiji $500.00

The forks tubes are shot and the front brakes need a rebuild .The engine has 34000 km with a big bore kit installed and a new set of custom made gears.

It's been outside for a while ,why people don't invest in a cover if they can't store a bike inside is a mystery with me.Tank and side covers are mint and a nice set of like new shocks thrown in along with a few boxes of extra parts.

The tank has a surprisingly small amount of rust inside but has some nasty gas in it.The engine oil looks a bit brown so I will have to change that before I try to start it .

My bikes have all sat outside for up to 15 years, never had an issue with rust.

The problem is with neglect. Strangely enough, even covered a lot of that stuff will still rust if it's not cleaned now and again.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

There's no doubt it can be saved. It's a shame that someone could just let smoething like that sit and rust eh. ... I see an e-bay shopper ...

The picture look worse than it really is. With a extra engine, carbs ,seat, front and rear wheels, CDI's and coils, excellent shocks ,side covers the rust wasn't much of an issue. I bought the bike for the exhaust and tank but now I am thinking just to clean it up and ride it .

Was that bike near salt water? Ive never seen the forks do that before.
Aside from the rust it looks like its in pretty decent shape.
            Congrats. Rick

I'm a few thousand miles from the closest ocean so it's not from salt water.I guess the last owner stored it uncovered and with a few dings here and there sitting through who knows how many winters outside would do it. I have an extra set of forks so that's no big deal .I 'm just happy the exhaust and tank are in excellent shape.

                Great buy,
                that'll do up nicely,
the exhaust is the hard to come buy 'spagetti' pipes.

Partsnmore sells a nice little 34 piece allen head bolt set for $7. They're cadmium plated so they are rust-resistant, and might help with that case of chicken pox . For $7 you can't beat 'em.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.
