  • Intermitent Tach Failure

Hey guys, the last two times I rode, my tach stopped working and then started working again. Everything seems to be in order as far as wiring conections goes....any thoughts? Has anyone experienced....and more importantly, fixed this problem? I was kinda proud of the fact that everything on the old bike worked...and now this happens. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Check the big white connector behind the fuse block mounting plate. Mine melted because of corrosion and shorted the connection from the generator. When that was happening, the tach stopped working as well. It's definitely an electrical connection problem, but the trick is tracing down where the connection is bad.

My tach used to run from idle up to 4 or 5 k and bounce there, I pulled the plugs apart closest to the tach for an unrelated matter and it magically goes smoothly up through the rpms when i crack the throttle now. So yeah, I second checking all your connections first. There is a tech tip in the repairs section about the proper cleaner to use for the insides of your tach, but I'd use this as a last resort. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it!)
