The rubber grommet left my '78 XS100 on Saturday. I have done a temperary fix using a piece of fuel hose and some silicone. I would like to replace it with the correct grommet. Can any one direct me to a source?
Thanx

I finally got the replacement grommet. I cleaned the tensioner removing the oil and RTV (my make shift plug didn't stay). Installed the new grommet and off to the car wash. Got home and the dang grommet was gone again.
Should I be using an adhesive? Am I building pressure in the crank case which is blowing the dang thing out. Neither of my manuals are any help I have ordered two more plugs which should be in mid-week. Needless to say, I need to find out why.
Help!!!

I usually clean the tensioner where the plug goes with some ether or contact cleaner, then put a little RTV on the edges of the plug, then let it dry. Sorry for your loss!
There's not a lot of pressure in that area unless the locking bolt is loose and allowing the camchain follower to move in and out a bit. With the assembly off the engine, you can see how if you press the plunger quickly, the shaft acts like a small hydraulic cylinder and exert quite a pressure behind the plug, causing it to pop off. Properly installed and tightened, the plunger should not move at all. Take it off, remove the plunger and lock bolt, and check for a shiny patch on either or both.
I will check it out Ken. I did re-adjust the tensioner this spring. I didn't torque the bolt, just set it tight and ran up the lock nut. The chain isn't making any noise like it is loose, but stranger things have happened. My temp fix using a piece of fuel line and RTV plugging the hole and on the circumference should have held.
I realize this may seem like a minor deal to some, but you can loose a lot of oil in a hurry when cursing down the highway. And living in central Minnesota there can be a significant distance to the next town with a parts house.
Thanx

I had that plug come out a couple of times when I was cursing down the highway. I bought a couple of new ones and cursed the moron that designed the fitting. Cleaned the hole with some brake cleaner and scrubbed it out with some sandpaper. Added some locktite blue to the plug and tapped it in place. No problems even when Im cursing down the freeway!

Good one, cursing down the highway - oh well, Moma said it would be important someday. I did mean crusing LOL!
Ken, as always you hit it on the head! Turns out the threads were buggered up in the tensioner housing. What felt snug wasn't pressure on the plunger. Time for a new unit or a helicoil.
Thanks

I stripped mine out many years ago. Just pull it off and tap it over sized and it will work fine. Mine happened due to over-tightening the lock nut. You should have no worries cruising after the fix.
