  • Special dimensions

I'm looking for some dimensions for the front brake reatainer clips on an 80SG, and was hoping one you fine XSives with a special and a measuring device (didn't want to say calipers as it might get confusing) might be able to help. We have a member in New Zealand who's being driven slowly crazy by rattling brakes, and unfortunately the part is extremely hard to find. I'm thinkin' the part may not be too hard to make if the dimensions are known. Here's an image of the part -

I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

Hey pass the word on to our member that my bike is a 80 sg and I used to work as a machinist, tomorrow after work I can take my baby apart and get him detailed measurements.

Big - Thanks, man! He may have already found a place to get the missing parts and I think he's going to check tomorrow. We had a discussion going on another thread, so before you dissassemble maybe we should see if he orders 'em. Here's a link to the other thread - Rattling Brakes

Yep, I just did my nightly read-through/update. I read that thread right before this one.

Thanks for starting the thread, I really appreciate your help on this one. I just tallied up the cost of both clips for both calipers, retainer and anti rattle, added 10 bucks for postage and converted to NZ dollars. Came out at $78.32 and in my book thats expensive, so I may have to get the age thing out of the way and get my tools out again.

Hey BigDick I appreciate your offer but please don't make a special job out of this if you have something better to do. My brakes have been rattling for 10 years now and I'm fairly certain I can put up with them for a while longer. Were just going into our winter so the beast will be laid up for a while anyway. In saying that, detailled measurements would be good so I can produce an Autocad drawing and maybe publish it on this forum for anyone else wanting to make them.

It's only vaguely a special project, I have new brake pads for all three calipers, new fork seals and progressive springs, and new wheel bearings all the way around (except for the ninja bearing [right rear]) so taking mine apart is a good reason to put new pads in and I can also get you your measurements. It's a win win thing.

BigRichard (sorry, just can't say it ) - You're a good man, brother. And Brian, I think your offer to put up an autocad drawing of these parts would be an excellent addition to the forums. Seeing how difficult those little buggers are to come by, I'm sure others will be thanking you in the future. In the immortal words of Hannibal Smith, "I love it when a plan comes together."
