last friday when i rode my xj for the first time i had the air box on but not connected and it ran fairly good . two days later i hooked the air box cranked it, let it warm up, it idled at 1000 perfectly. but when i tried to give some throttle it acted like it was starving for gas. took out air filter no change.

Make sure you are getting fuel flow from your petcocks first. Try running the petcocks from the prime position.2H7 (79) owned since '89

Also, Check your SNORKEL on the airbox, critters like to get up there and make nests, etc., and so it could be clogged, choking down the air flow!? JAT!? I know the XJ's are supposed to be much harder to install the airbox and intake tubes, make sure you didn't crimp one or have it not fully seated ALL around the intake bell of each carb!
