Anyone know the model # of the mikuni carbs on a 1980 xs1100 special?
The reason I ask is I need the air jet (pilot) #185. According to my manual its a Minkuni BS34-111 3J600. I looked on the carbs and cannot find a model # on them. I went to a local shop. They ordered the jets but they dont fit. I have to bring them back and I wanted to have as much info as possible. Thanks again for all your help.

I can tell you that the later airjets have a different thread than the early models. Also, 210s for 78 and 79's vs. 185 newer years I think.

The ones the gave me are a larger thread than the ones I have. So later models have smaller threads??

      Thanks

All the XS11 carbs are BS34's, but they used Types I, II, and III over the years.

If you look at the side of the carbs, you have to move around to let the light change, you should see a number.

It will start with something like 3U9, which tells you the year and series.

If you can't see that, the early 78-79 carbs are the same externally, and the 80-81 are the same externally. there were some minor changes internally, over the years.

The 78-79's have the idle screw at the top toward the rear of they bike at the front of the seat. The 80-81 idle screw is toward the motor, underneath the carbs.

The 78-79 idle mixture screws (4), at the front of the carbs (motor side, top) stick up so it looks like you could turn them with your fingers. The 80-81 mixture screws are in the same place but down in a well, perhaps under some caps.

I can't remember which is which. I do remember that someone one said on the list that you could force it in because the threaded length is so short. I never had the nerve to do that in fear that I would screw-up (no pun intended) the carb body.

Thats my fear also. It seems the ones the shop gave me are shorter than the stock ones. I have gone back to the shop and left them my carbs so the can find the right ones. The shop owner looked very confused, because he said he spoke to Minkuni and the said those were the right ones. I am begining to wonder if the carbs I have were original to the bike.

I could not find any model # one the carbs. O well.

Thank you for all your help.

As I mentioned, our carbs do have a number in the side, it's just very hard to see sometimes.

Anyone know if carb cleaner takes that number off?

I haven't looked since I soaked mine, but mine say 3u9-XXXX on the side of both sets.

I dont have any pics of the carbs right now. I left them at the shop so they can find the air jets. If I get a chance maybe I can swing by and snap a couple.

                  Thanks all

Call me crazy, but I do not see the air pilot jet removed in your pictures. The # 185 jet is located in the rear air entrance on the left side looking into the air bell that attaches to the Air box see the break down on page 4-1 chapter 4 CARBURETION, item # 48. It looks from your pictures that the jets are still in their respective places on your carbs.

What he is saying is that is not the #185 jet, that one is likely #42.5, possibly #45.

The #185 you refered to goes in the front of the carb, air cleaner side.

The item he pointed to looks exactly like the #185 pilot air jet that came out of my 81 special carbs at the intake boot side of the carb throat.

The numbers 42.5 and 45 I have come to think refer to pilot jets (pilot fuel jets). Which are in the smaller tower, inside the float bowl area, hidden down in the tower. Mine look like the item in the bottom left of the picture where the pilot air jet is identified. Perhpas I have much more to learn?
