where is the timing mark tHAt lines up with the "c" MARK ON THE LEFT HAND COVER OR THE T MARK WHICH IS ON THE LEFT HAND COVER BY THE ADVANCE MECHANISM.

There should be a 'mark' on a piece of metal that is held to the block by a screw. It is on the lower left of the timing system.

It's just a pointer and can be adjusted if needed.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

I'd avoid moving that pointer unless you know the procedure to find TDC.

How do you find out where it goes if it's been removed and you have to replace it? I hope there is a simple way.

If you have the service manual, the procedure is in there.

It's not on the cover - it's behind it. You have to remove the left hand cover (your left while sitting on the bike) and then you will see the marks on a wheel mounted to the end of the crankshaft.

The pointer is mounted on a screw at about 7:00 position. If you have NO pointer, you should be able to make one!
Pull all 4 spark plugs, and turn the engine over by hand until you have the "T" at about the 7:00 position. Use a pencil in the #1 spark plug hole, and SLOWLY rotate the crank, BOTH directions, looking at the pencil. When it's at the highest point, you are at TDC, or Top Dead Center. You can now fashion a pointer with a bit of sheet metal, and line it up with the "T" mark.
This is your new pointer. DO NOT MOVE IT!! You can now do the maintenance that is needed on the bike.
              Good Luck.
