  • shifting problem

Just put a replacement engine in my 1980 xs-11. Problem is when i go to shift out of 1st gear it hangs up and grinds. Is this a clutch problem or the infamous 1st,2nd gear thing. The remaining gears shift ok.i am seeing nice weather and want to get this fixed before it really turns nice.

Yep, sounds to me like the "infamous" 1st and 2nd gear issue. I had the same problem, except mine was in 2nd and 3rd gears. Have fun with the dremel!

The gear issue is when the gear tips become rounded. Under pressure (Acceleration) the roundness on the two gears ends up pushing them apart. They jump over each other then try to grab again on the next contact spot. The feeling almost resembles sitting on a machine gun... unless it's so far gone that it just sits there and grinds.

If all the gears work EXCEPT 2nd.. then yeah, I would have to say that that is the problem.

        shifting problem

yeah you are exactly right! feels like a machine gun. Anyway, i guess the solution is grinding the dogs on the 1st and 2nd gears with a grinding stone?

I discovered my bike had the same issue AFTER I got it home and started riding it. Kind of teed me off a bit (more mad at myself for not catchign it since I had read about the issue on this site prior to buying it.)

The fix is not TO horrible. IT certainly is not kindegarten mechanics, but with all the help on this site, it is VERY doable by even someone who might consider themselves an ametuer mechanic.
