Woops , wrong plug

Doing my first oil change on my 79 xs1100sf and found what looked like a drain plug on the left side just under the alluminum cap (says Yamaha )
on the engine.
Some oil came out very little then I found the real plug in behind the oil filter.
What did I do?
Was that engine oil from the wrong plug or was it some other lubricant for something else?
If it is something else then what? and how do I replace it?

Sounds like youy may have drained the middle gear oil perhaps?
Did it come from this?

Middle gear is only plug I can think of that oil would come out of, can you bee a little more specific on where it was?

Thanks for the response.
The plug I removed was under the Breaker cover.
It won't come all the way out untill the cover is removed.
That any oil at all came out of it could be due to the fact that the crank case was definitly overfilled from an unnessecary top up then gas from non starting.
Is it oil or other?

Ok, from what I understand from one of xssiveone's posts is that is an oil gallery? plug - mine was actually just slightly loose and dripping oil a couple days ago. As long as the o-ring is still intact, I would think you could just tighten her back up and not worry about it.

Nope, had nothing to do with the crank case being overfull, but it is defenitely oil from the crankcase so there is nothing to top up once you complete the oil change. There is an oil gallery or passageway from one side of the engine to the other to allow oil to be pumped to the main bearings. Since they didn't have drills that could turn corners in 1978 they had to drill straight in from the side, and then close off that opening with the bolt you loosened up.

In addition to what Snow stated, make sure there is no dirt under the O-ring or on the mating surface and snug it back up.
