  • I did IT!, broke the oil pump idle gear

Well everything was going very well. Got the new clutch friction plates, steel plates and springs.
Last night I assembled the clutch basket and proceeded to install into the bike. Aligned the gear on the rear side of the basket with the trans and all was good. Started to tighten the bolt to 50 ft/lb when "PING" and the torque went soft. Undid the nut and removed the basket to find the Oil pump idle GEAR 2H7-13341-00-00 bent and cracked.
Checked Yamaha and you know it, the part is no longer available. Called Stan Hutchison, as he has a parts bike. Stan will let me borrow the gear from his parts bike tonight. However his bike has a running engine. So I need anyone that has a NON running scrap engine with that gear in it, if I can purchase said gear.

    Found on the following bikes:

Thanks to Cokeman for his help in getting the 1100 back on the road.

Clutch may need breaking in as it still exhibits the same slippage problem but not as bad.

I have adjusted the cable. New plates, steel and springs. Not sure if this was the fix or not but the clutch was definitely wrong and with the wrong number of plates.
DOES THE CLUTCH HAVE A RUN IN TIME, MILES etc?

The "slippage" you refer to - is it clutch slippage or tranny slippage? Does it happen while accellerating, in gear? If that is the case, did you do the 1st & 2nd gear fix? I had to do mine twice, because the first time I didn't grind enough off of one of the gears (can't remember which one) to prevent the slippage.

I have not done the fix. When accelerating in 2 or 3 or 4 the bike accelerates very fast then suddenly accelerates even faster like I hit passing gear.

It does not go out of gear or slow down in speed and accelerate in RPM

This is like the clutch is slipping moderately then grabs completely to jettison you forward. This is accompanied by a surge that travels to the rear end with a thud, jump.
Any help in this is very much welcome.

Did you replace the clutch springs??
The springs ARE the one item that will allow the clutch to slip. I try to find the "heavy duty" springs, as they seem to work better.

I'm realizing that I think I need to replace the springs. Probably get new clutch friction plates to.

Bike runs like a rabbit and will take off no poblems. Every now and then when I am hammering it up around 6-7K it seems like it just looses grip and rpm shoots up to redline, let off the throttle and it grabs and runs fine.

Hard to find the springs and such right now though. The mad rush is on for spring parts.

Sounds to me like your just hitting the power band of the motor!

These bikes will launch hard, hit around 3500-4000rpm then take off even harder.

ALL clutch slip will be accompanied by a noticable increase on the tach.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

Driver Ray; Yes I replaced the springs with HEAVY DUTY ones.

Crazcnuk; When the power band kicks in, will there be this huge jump in power or just an normal linear increase?

                      Hey Dell,

The symptoms that DGXser describes about the bike all of a sudden rising in RPMs but the bike not going any faster under heavy throttle in the higher gears at 7+k rpm, ARE the slippage symptoms.

It's rare for the clutch to slip in the lower rpms and gears unless the springs or plates are very worn, but then again you would NOT be able to put much stress/throttle into it without it breaking loose and slipping again in the higher rpms, so the lightening bolt type of accelleration you are describing isn't slippage.

What if any other mods have you done to your bike, like aftermarket pipes, intake Indy filters vs. OEM box?? Sounds almost like you're experience throttle response lag in the lower rpms, but once you get into the power band, it really takes off.

Do you have all of the vacuum lines connected correctly? There is a vacuum sensor box up under the tank that the TCI uses for providing vacuum advance input. The XJ's TCI controls both vac. and cent. adv. curves with it's programmed chip, no mechanical parts. The power band can be a pretty strong kick in the pants sensation, not just a linear progression in power. This is the rip your arms out of the sockets feeling folks describe when they get their machines properly tuned, and take it out for a good run!!

Yeah TC, I figured it was clutch.

I know when mine hits around 2500-3000 (when the mains hit) it defintiely pulls harder, especially when it is cold and I turn the choke off early, man, it is like a different machine when it hits the mains. Most certainly pull your arms out their sockets power feeling. If I am not leaning forward a bit it feels like it will pull out of my hands and leave me on the ground behind it.

Dell, it can be. If the bottom end is not tuned quite right it can almost feel like your coasting up to 3000 then the motor comes to life, the back wheel breaks loose, etc.

                          It can be quite unnerving.

You will find lots of threads here where people have had to retune to get the bottom end back. When these bikes are tuned 100% they can pull your arms off from about 2000 on up.
