NEWBIE: Is there a missing screw here...

I just bought this bike and am just going over it to see what needs done to get it summer ready.

Please take a look at the picture and tell me if there is a bolt or something missing from this hole and what it is for?

Not the best picture, sorry. I am a real newbie, as this is my first bike, so your help is much appreciated.

It's the Cam Chain Tensioner, and there should be a plug in the end of it.

ya, just supposed to be a little plug in there. with out it, there may be a smallish oil leak that will leave a little spot of oil. that just goes with one of the laws of motorcycling : home is where your bike sits still long enough to leave an oil stain.

edit: to replace mine, i just used some black rtv sealant and let it fully cure before putting it back on.

Get a service manual and read about the cam chain tensioner and it's adjustment proceedure before you remove it, take your time, if the cam chain tensioner isn't set up properly, you could bend valves when you try to start it. either get a plug and rtv it into place without removing the tensioner from the bike or read read read. many a fellow has ended up doing some head work after messing around with the cam chain tensoiner. just a thought. have a niceday and ride safe

The little plugs are still available from Yamaha for like $5. They are rubber coated metal. Put a little Hi Temp RTV around it and push it in place. That will seal it AND prevent it from coming back out. No need to remove the whole assembly.
