  • 79 xs1100 special revival

Hello fellow XSers! I just wanted to come on here and share my gratitude toward all of the help everyone has given me. All the hours of reading I have done in this forum has inspired me to do a complete restore on this XS1100.

A little background: This bike has been sitting probably since 1985. Supposedly the guy gave it to my grandfather-in law so his kids (father in law) could tinker with it and ride it. Well, that never happened. It has been sitting in the elements for about 22 Years! Underneath the shed I have seen it the last 2 years and wondered what could I get out of it. Little did I know that it was such a big bike and really it was nicer than I thought. (when I first looked at the bike I thought it was a CB750 because the side covers of a cb750 were laying around it!)

Anyways, about a month ago now I asked My girlfriends PAW PAW what was he going to do with it. He said i could have it and like that I now am a proud owner of a FREE and COMPLETE(everything is there!!) 79 XS1100 Special!
I hope that I can get alot from yall cause I dont know anything about the XS.
I have been a KZ1000 Guy for a while since I got one of those for free too.
But anyways here are some pics of me doing the tear down and the motor is coming out tommorow!
Also of me with my fancy funnel draining the middle dirve
    Thanks again
    Austin

THANKS! I would have never guessed LOL Would have got the engine out tonight but did not have all my tools in the garage... All I needed was a 12mm open end to take off the axle.... the lil 12mm in the set of tools on the bike did not work and was just wanting to strip the bolts

              good luck

I know I absolutely LOVE my 79 special. Of course, it's my first bike, but it's definitely fun! With the forum and all the help from everyone here, you should be able to get that up and going. They're awesome bikes. Good to see another one getting back up and running!

Well thanks Im about to pull the engine and take off the harness so i can go get the frame repainted. I dont think i mentioned the mileage on this.... only 9800 miles! I think thats a pretty good considering how old it is.

How much usually would it cost to get a frame painted???

                      Cylinders

The cylinder walls themselves look to be ok but one of the valves was stuck open and everything was really nast so im just going to clean it up and put new seals and etc..

                      All the internals look great
cams are immaculate and so is everything else.

                        pulled the motor

Finally got the motor out tonight! It was a booger and HEAVY! New rings and a little honing of the cylinders and a lil bit of cleaning and she will be ready to go.
