  • POR 15 Update

Thought I'd report on treating my tank with POR 15 over the weekend.

It was a little cooler (around 50 degrees, but that is as warm as its been) than I'd like but I'm looking at getting everything rolling in the next two weeks so I wanted plenty of time for curing. I did bring the tank in the house and let my blond girl know that it was going to stay for a few days. She didn't like it but didn't make a fuss about it either.

I already had the tank clear of rust but I used the Marine Clean and Metal Ready products as instructed. Then I mixed the POR 15 for what seemed like forever to get it well mixed. Poured it in the tank, slowly rotated thinking slow rotiserrie until I was satisfied all was covered. Then I attempted to drain it out the hole where the cap goes. I should have thought that through a little better. The gas filler hole has a lip that extends into the tank so you can't get a complete drain. Should have directed to a petcock hole instead I guess.

Anyway after 5 days it is still curing but it looks good and that is a cool product. It appears to make what I can only describe as and bladder that sticks to the tank metal. And it looks good too in that it has a silver metal appearance.

    So far so good.

I too just finished using the POR kit. I lined the tank a little over two weeks ago. I had the same experience. I did things a little different. I did not follow the instructions on using duct tape to cover the petcock holes and fuel sender. What I did do is make a gasket with a plate to cover those areas. For the fuel fill I used a large rubber stopper. The tank had some rust. The Metal Ready works great in removing it. The tank was very clean after. The liner does take forever to mix properly. I also let it drain through the fuel fill, since you don’t want it to pool near the petcocks. Took about 8 days to cure to the point it looked done. Cost me $40.00 at the local shop, but I feel it’s worth the money.
