What options are out there for replacing the speedo on my 79 special? I know getting the same type of unit is pretty pricey - and I'll be honest - it doesn't have to be the exact one. Are there other models that can bolt on? Are there new replacement units I could get to put on?

I know there are digital ones out there - but don't know if there's anything that's a "bolt on" option or would mount on. Really, if I could use something from a different year/model that's fine, the biggest thing I'd like is for it to basically "bolt on" or be minimal fuss in swapping out.

If there's something new that would work - I'm cool with that too - just as long as it has a chrome bucket on it that matches the tach - as I have a special I need a round one - not a square one.

    Suggestions?

    Hi Wolfpaws,
Yamaha parts swap like LEGO. A round speedo from any XS series bike will bolt right on and give an accurate reading. You should be able to find a nice one for $100 or less. I replaced my XS11SG's seized-up stock speedo with an admittedly kinda beat up looking but working fine speedo from a US model XS650 that cost me US$25 plus postage. Least desirable and thus the least costly are the Jimmy Carter mandated 85mph units. 120, 140 & 160mph units and the metric units from Canada will all work for you.

Any good sites you'd recommend to find one?

Really thinking that some of the "deals" on eBay and the like aren't too good - especially when people want to bend you over for shipping a lot of times.

I think B Walker has listed a couple in the forsale area. He has one he bought off ebay but does not need now and would hate to pay shipping to Aussieland if he does not have to. Also couple links to some there.

For the Speedo, ANY round Yamaha speedo WILL work! If you stick with the 750/850/xs1100 ones, they also have the reed switch for the self cancel feature on the turn signals.

No, the ONLY "factory" tach that will work is an XS1100 one. You CAN mount an aftermarket one, just do a "search" for the proper thread.

Thanks for that, I was going to offer you commission till' I seen the bit about "shipping to Aussieland". As much as we love (to beat) our Trans Tasman Brothers us Kiwi's don't generally like being called Aussies.

I keep telling folks I learn something new all the time on here. Showing my ignorance perhaps, or lack of attention to Social Studies classes in general!! I never knew until reading things here on XS11 that New Zealand was not a part of Australia! So it takes a while for 43 years of thought process to get rebuilt to somethin else!

                  Do I get half commission??

You wanna hear an Aussie react when they're referred to as Kiwi's, they hate it!! Mostly because we thrash them at most sports on a regular basis. There's only 4 million of us vs's 21.7 million of them.

Half commission, hmmmm. let me see, full commision would be 1% which is $2.05. Half commission is 0.5% which is is $1.25, less paypal fee's, less bank charges,...... How about I send you a postage stamp.
