Cowboy - Welcome. I've heard of people boiling carbs, but haven't indulged in the practice myself. A couple cans of carb cleaner, and a can of brake parts cleaner does it for me. It's not as cheap as water, but I save a fortune not having to heat it up .
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

Some of the people here HAVE tried the boiling method with good results. It's not JUST distilled water, you need a little acid in it as well! If you add a little distilled vinegar to the water, you have the acid you need!
IF you go for plain carb cleaner, use the spray type. DO NOT SOAK THE CARB BODIES!! There are rubber seals in the butterfly shafts, and they WILL cause you endless problems if you soak the carbs!
Do a search on carb cleaning or triple clean, and you should find LOTS of threads!
      Welcome to the site!

Sounds like a neat idea, but I don't have a cooking pot big enough to fit my carb rack into... If I did, I don't think I'd want to ruin it by cooking carbs in it.

DiverRay - Are you saying that if I boil the carbs I don't have to completely disassemble them? Will the rubber melt or distort? That sounds a lot easier.

            Hi 'Bug,
go buy a single use aluminum turkey roaster to boil your carbs in. Perhaps get two and put one inside the other, that foil is kinda frail.
If you share your life with a significant other wait until she's gone shopping before you pop the roasterful of carbs on the kitchen stove.

Never having done it, let me ask this question. Will boiling the carbs really get the small orifices and passageways clean inside the carbs? Seems to me like you may still need a can of carb cleaner to complete the job, but who knows?

I was lucky enough to have a sonic cleaner at my disposal.

Took the carbs totaly apart. I left the butterflies alone.. I didn't mess with the return springs either. I sprayed carb cleaner through every hole in the carb body to clean up the major junk. I thought they were pretty clean too.

Dropped the individual carb bodies in the sonic cleaner with enough water to cover the carb body, a good squirt of Dawn dishwashing soap and a couple of "glugs" of Simple Green.

Turned that sucker on and in three minutes you could barely see the bottom of the tank for all of the crud that ran out.

If you can lay hands on one I highly recommend it for the carbs.
The solution won't hurt the seals on the butterfly shafts either.

I need one so I can put all of my carbs in it without taking them apart. The one they have that might fit is like $170! YIKES might as well just soak them in carb cleaner.......

How do you expect to get them clean without taking them apart? And, DON'T soak them in carb cleaner without taking all the rubber bits out.

                            let me rephrase

I do not want to have to take the bodies apart form eachother. I have them completely disassembled. Also dont want to have to take off the choke assembly and the butterflys. You can go look at my thread to see the pics of my carbs already apart.

This is an interesting thread and I have a question or two. I am doing a set of carbs one of which is dirtier then anything I have ever seen - just loaded with varnish. Why just one of them is behond me. My last set was the carbs off the Timemachine. The carb spray and elbow grease with a brush and carb kits did the trick. Obviously I can not get the brush into the passages on this set. I am not resistant to buying toys (tools) to do the best job I can, but I joined the ranks of the unemployed this month so I must delay buying a sonic cleaning unit. If any of you have done the boiling thing I would like to hear your remarks as to how satisfied you were with the end result.

                              Thanx
