Rear caliper question

on my 81 special the rear caliper is trash, took the one off a 80 special are they interchangeable? the only difference i can see the 81 has a backing plate on the back side of each pad where the 80 has none, which look like new pads did the po leave them off? should i put them on or is it the diff. between pad manufactures ?

You should be able to swap REAR calipers between ALL XS1100's! The rear is the same on all machines, only the fronts have been changed to protect the innocent.
Brake calipers:
Rear ALL YEARS are the same
Front: Standards are ALL the same, Specials ONLY fit the XS1100 Specials, and XJ is a ONE YEAR ONLY.
