  • Progressive rear shock/spring

Does replacing the rear shock and spring with progressive units make a differance in the ride and more importantly, the comfort.

I would say yes. It'll soak up the bumps better - particularly the hard ones.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

I usually ride with the wife on back. We are shall we say large people. I set the springs up to deal with the weight but a ride over 100 miles gets the but in a tissy!

Deny - If you're riding 2-up, you might want to go with progressive springs appropriate for the load level. You can buy just the springs and install them on your old shocks. Speaking of shocks, get ready for the 'sticker' variety 'cause those puppies can be pretty expensive. I've got Mikes XS shocks on mine, so I'm probably a little under-sprung, but riding 2-up on Betsy with maybe 300 lbs total they work fine. Also, Betsy's nekid, so if you have fairings and bags there is additional weight to cogitate on.
