  • Left side crank oil seal

    OK, need ideas.

The oil seal leaked before, so I installed a new one and ITS STILL LEAKING!!!

I dont want to pull the engine again, so any ideas would be welcome. The seal is new, its leaking in the middle (where the crank is, not at the case). Sealing the cover there is nearly impossible, since the engine's been hit there in a crash and badly repaired. Nothing vital gone tho...

    Oh bugger

    Strom,

    Sounds a little worrying...

If it's had a crash on that side then one thought is that the crank is slightly out of centre - (ie bent )

I hope not for your sake Strom - but it's one thought as the centre of the seal would leak then - or if the end of the crank was gouged enough to rip the seal ....or of course the seal was damaged in the first place - but as it's new not likely.

Last time my crank was out of the motor (this hasn't happened much honest!) I put it on some engineers v-blocks to make sure it was absolutely true. Luckily I was working in an engineering college at the time and got on real well with the workshop guys who really knew what they where doing. If you have any sort of access to these sort of facilities they'll tell you if you have any problems (and the oil leak is bad enough to have to dig back into the engine again). If there's only a slight leak - maybe it's a case of having to live with it....my old Guzzis incontinence spring to mind here!

The crank looks fine.... the block is smashed up a bit underneath, enough to chip off bout 1cm piece of it where the engine guards dont protect it. AFAIK it hit a curb.
The leak occoures even when cranking the engine with the starter. I will check it again with the engine running, since it's a few drops (ok, less than 20) when I stop.

Are you sure it's the crank seal? On the left end of the engine, there is a bolt going into the oil gallery, on the other end there is a plug held in place when the alternator cover goes on. (I might have these reversed... someone correct me if I do) In any event, they both have O-rings on them. My buddy thought he had a seal leaking but it turned out to be just the bolt needed tightening.

xssiveone, I have just tracked down the source of many a drip from my XS - from a bolthead directly below my advancer cover, is that what your friend tightened down?

Yes, that is the one. It looks like a large washer with a bolt head in the center of it.

Sorry, took off the advance assy. and watched the oil leak out that seal. It would be a LOT easier if it were anyplace else.
