    Hello,

    Can anyone tell me if Bob Jones motorcycle shop is still open in Shawnee KS. Yes I am aware he has passed away. But am looking for help woth my 1981 Special and he used to do all my work. I have a nearly mint bike that has starter gear troubles and the repair is beyond my abilities. Also the parts are impossible to find.

    Appreciate any information and advic,

    Thanks, Duane in New Orleans

    Most parts aren't too difficult to find. Here, mostly.

    Depends on just what you need.

    I believe his shop was Merriam Cycle?

      No, unfortunately Merriam Cycles is no longer open for business.

          You can still get replacement parts for the starter gear, BUT.. you will have to pull the engine and split the cases to get to it. I'm sending you a PM.

                  PM = Private Message

                  There's several ways to get to the PMs, but at the very top of the screen where it says "Forums", hold your pointer over that, and a drop down list will drop down. Click on "User CP" and it will take you to your Private Message screen where I left you one.

                  You can get the starter clutch kit at Partsnmore.com, but there's a minimum order of $35.

                      I can't see the Ebay listing here at work, but if it's a STARTER, he needs a starter CLUTCH which is inside the motor on a shaft the primary chain is around.

                      Just for your info, the engine from the piston rods down, the cases, and the drives out to the final drive are all the same for all the XS and XJ in 1100cc. The electronics such as the alternator/stator and the pickup coils differ, but the actual engines, gears, and starters all interchange.
