  • XJ charging system on an XS

Another member asked me if there would be a problem putting an XJ rotor, stator, and sidecover on an XS to get more power for things. I realize the plug ends are different, but couldn't you swap that end and be in business?

Yeah, the sidecover would say YICS on it.. but who, besides us, would have a clue really?

Tod, I am not sure about the XJ stator and field coils....
but, I had to replace mine with the coils from a 78XS750...bolted right into the 11's cover, got a little more power, not really enuf to speak of maybe another .5 volt

    Oh, i used the 750 reg/rect also

Yeah.. the XJ makes quite a bit more juice than the XS, so I was wondering about if it was as easy as what I am thinking.

Hey, let me know...Always needs more power, even if it is in the battery

          Tod,

I dont know about switching the XJ parts in, Since I have never had the opportunity to tear in to one. Just dont drink too much at MOTM, or I might get the chance

What I have contemplated is the center winding. Since it is basically an electro-magnet, it could be wond with a smaller gage wire, making more turns and thus a stronger magnetic field for the rotor to spin through and create more juice. I have one that has been burnt up, and would be a good candidate for rewinding, but I cannot find a source for the shelacked copper winding wire around here.

Anyone with an idea on where to get some of it would be most helpful. Then I could guinea pig it on my scoot.

Try an electric motor shop. They should have some available, or at least tell you how long and how much. JAT

This is something that I am considering doing as well. I have obtained the cover, stator, and rotor. The one thing I was unure of it the regulator. The XJ regulator has a different part number than the XS. With all the new electronic components for my FI project, I may need more juice.

Well... Geezer is the one to ask about the regulators.

Ivan, I talked to a local shop about rewiring one for me (They rewind electrical motors) and didn't seem too interested in doing it. Hopefully you'll have better luck at it... or at least find the stuff to do it. I have a couple extra stators, but they have been rubbed by the rotor and are junk.

                  Tod,

The cases and cranks are the same between the XS's and the XJ. The reg/rect is the same....at least Geezer sells the same unit for both, he just puts on different plugs to fit the XJ vs. the XS's. I can't remember the exact amounts, was posted a while back, but IIRC, the XS cranks out about 21amps at max rate, and the XJ puts out about 26amps. The XJ is a brush system vs. the XS's brushless.
