  • Carb question

Hello i have a quick question about the carbs on a XS1100e if someone could help, when i press the needles up they do go up but not very fast because of the seal i guess. That only happends on three of the four carbs, and the other one its as if the seal isn't working.. could that be that i didn't put the tops back on ?

If you had the tops opened up and removed the diaphram, did you make certain it was in the groove? and that the tab was lined up when you reinstalled it?

yeah it should be the same as the others, i took them off to clean up the carbs and put them all on the same way but this one is just springy, it doesnt hold any air like the others...

The best way to test if you have a seal is to put your mouth over the half moon shape opening at the top of the inlet bell and draw air into your mouth to pull the slide up. If it is sealing, it will work, if it is not sealed, the slide wont move or will only move a slight amount. And yeah, it aint gonna taste that great, but it should not be fuel.

If it is not working, I would open the top back up and check that the tab in your rubber diaphram is lined up with the indent in the top of the carb body. Otherwise, look at the diaghram closely for a pin hole or tear in it.

You can also reach a finger in, lift the slide up, then cover the half-moon with your thumb.

The slide should come down very slowly, if at all. Same test, no taste...

If the slides just drop, then look for holes in the diaphragm.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

Awww...You ruined it. Its fun to see if they will suck on a carb.

Actually, I tested mine as I suggested and that was when I realized I had my needle valve off center. I took one out for S&G's and when I put it back it was just ever so slightly off center, that slide would not go down all the way or as fast. Had to loosen the screws, slide it all the way down and center it well, then tighten the screws over the needle valve. This is on the later carbs.

awww See.. you should have told me you were having fun!

I just did this test on the carbs on my 'new' Special and it needs diaphragms. At least two have several holes in them .
