I bought new Diaphragms from this place (motoallparts). The price is reasonable @$65 for the set compared to Slide/diaphragm combos that average $75 dollars each. They are nice and they do work but the quality is not what the originals were. The originals are a rubber impregnated fiber. The after market are just rubber with no clothe to add strength. I used the method they recommended, and all was going well until I went to install the last one and tore one of the news diaphragms. Fortunately one of my old ones was still usable so I put it back on.
I haven't tried the method of removing the top ring, but if that prevents accidentally tearing the new diaphragm during installation, then it's a better way of doing it. It is important to mark your slide position relative to the tab notch so that the slides are aligned correctly in the slide bore.

Actually if you don't it's ok, just make sure the hole in the slide is at the closest point to the engine when installed in the carb with the carb installed. That's the stock position and where they belong which is what you're doing when you mark them.
