  • XS eleven parts ?

Hi, thanks for the replies before, but not exactly what I was looking for. I want to know if I can use a gas tank off a, say '78 XS 850 on my '79 XS 11.
I want to know if anyone has tried, on purpose or by accident, any parts off different years, models.
It seems to me that aside from the electronics and engines, alot of the "cosmetic" parts look the same.
Also I don't seem to have any luck with petcocks, and I'm not about to drop $250 for new ones. Anybody got any ideas besides drop $160 to rebuild them ?
    Thanks,
    Luke

Urr . . . petcock rebuild kit is about $25 bucks here. Has all the stuff to do two standard petcocks, or two special petcocks and a octupus.

As far as parts interchange . . . it's a motorcycle. Anything you can make fit/work and looks good to you is a good thing. Nothing quite just "bolts on" though.

      Daniel,

      And your source is____________?

Whenever I go by the local HondaSuzyqKwackerYamahammer shop and say what I have, and I am looking for. I am looked at like I asked for a three barreled Weber for a Borgward pickup tryke by the young'uns working the counter. After I find the item on the 'puter for them, they then quote the order price plus 20%. My bike is older than most of them.

I do like the Partsnmore site, though.

Finding a good bike shop is kind of like finding a good gun store...

        Hmmm . . . I think you need a new dealer.

My dealer has catalogs of the aftermarket stuff . . . for things like petcock kits, he flips open the catalogue, says <insert name here> makes this, and about half the time he has it hanging on the shelf. The petcock kit fits a large number of bikes. Brand was common fuel parts but I cannot remember who...Rivco maybe?

Yep, time to find a new dealer. We have a new one in town, WOW (World Of Wheels)Motorcycles. I understand they are the Carmax/AutoNation of the used bike market, buy all the tradeins from the local dealers at wholesale and sell for that + some. They only deal in used metric bikes. I'll post something after I try them.

Thanks for the brand name, I'll see if they do bidnizz with WOW.

Luke, I can suggest getting the XS1100 CD-ROM located elsewhere within thses pages, and check part numbers. I asked a short time ago about the triples as well. I ran across a 78 standard in a yard a short time ago in decent shape I was thinking about getting it as a "some" parts bike. I was advised that some stuff is interchangable, like some driveshafts, rear ends and such, depending on model. I have a Midnight and wanted to stick with the black stuff, so I did not get the 78. I don't know if I would bet on a tank. If the tank is local, take the tank to the bike, or the bike to the tank and check its fit.

          Let us know...

Hey company I bought my Petcock Rebuild kits from is called K&L Supply. Many bike shops carry thier line, if not look on the net. Dennis Kirk (www.denniskirk.com) carries the K&L line.
I feel the correct fix is to rebuild them versus replace them. I love never having to shut my fuel off.

              just a note:

$29.95 for my 79 special - one kit does it all since there is no vacuum valve in the petcocks.

Having been by WOW, I got the impression that they do not sell parts or do repairs other than on their own bikes for sale.

                  Hey JK ...

I too have a 81 Midnight Special and afte beating my head against the wall night after night , looking for Midnight parts I found that I had to rely on other parts and well just paint them. The GOLD parts are nice but can't be found I have tried. Looked high and low. Even thought of getting a kit to do it myself. Ya learn real fast when ya need something and cant find it. I have also had a great deal of trouble with the local YAMAHA dealers in Southern IL. Young kids that have no idea what you are talking about. standing behind computers looking at parts pictures saying "It isn't made anymore. " I have tried RICE PADDY used parts and others to find the things I need. I did find a place in Rosebud, Mo. called OUTPOST MOTORCYCLE SALES. (573) 764-2359. They have a lot of parts and I have found some good success in dealing with them.

                    Robert,

I checked and the one in Marietta does have some books to order from, I am still not too sure how in depth they go, but the new guy behind the counter is the guy I bought the LH from last year. He had his own shop in town, Zen Moto, that he had to close recently. At least he knows what to look for..

                      xs eleven interchange parts

Thanks for all the tips. I agree that's it time for a new dealer. I live on the dark side of the moon as far as parts for my bike goes. I have actually been quoted $80 apiece to rebuild my petcocks.
The people at my dealer only know of my bike because a guy that worked there about a year ago had one, but he wrecked it and then left the dealer for parts west. I am thankful for the tips and will be calling some of the dealer thast you suggested. Until then it's ebay and whatever I can find "locally".
                      Thanks again,
                      Luke
