  • Xj Plug Gap

Can anyone help me with the proper plug gap for the 82 xj1100j.
the rocket scientist who prevously owned my bike replace both petcocks rendering them useless. now i have off and on. if i leave them in the on position it will leak and flood the engine, however usually when i switch them to off it takes care of the problem. we had a rain here in indy monday evening so my xj sat all night mon and all day tues in the shed with the fuel off. when i got it out this morn i noticed it had been leaking. (the first time its done it with the petcocks off) it hesitated about starting but fired. everything seemed fine as i pulled it to the street. it seemed to be idling to high (2500) so i eased the idle screw off a bit. when i went in to get my helment it died. upon restarting it ran like crap. it wanted to surge like it was missing a beat. i dorked with the idle and got it smoothed out. but when i went to ride it feelt like it was flooding in second with no power at all. i got ticked and drove the car to the office. is it possible i could have fouled one of the plugs. i though of replacing them this evening but need to know the proper gap setting. i'm also going to check to see if i lost a vacumm line somewhere. any other ideas or input would be appreciated. my other thought was junk in the carbs from the tank, but i have inline filters on each fuel line.

    thanks daryl

This also seemed to be an intermittent problem for me as well. the bike would idle smooth and be normal and have power until about 3500. after that it almost seemed like it was bogging down, MAJOR loss of power and a little hesitation when starting out. I seemed to have remedied this problem by replacing the vacuum hose coming out of the fuel diaphram and into the second carb boot.

This replacement was done 3 times, the heat where the hose connects on the carb boot is XSive. I seemed to be getting a leak after the bike warmed up and air was seeping in as the hose got softer and lost its seal at the fitting. I replaced it with a hose that could better withstand the heat and made sure it was securely clamped. As for today the bike ran like a top, seems like the hose cured the problem.

this ,by the way, seems like problem that only has happend 2 times last year, and for the first time this year yesterday. hopefully the vacuum leak was the culprit, so far so good.

      From the XJ service manual:

Plug type: BP6ES (NGK) or W20EP-U (Nippondenso)
      Gap: 0.7 ~ 0.8 mm or 0.028 ~ 0.032 inches
Tightening torque: 20nm or 14 ft. lbs

        thanks for the info

thanks for the info. when i got home i tried again. it fired with no problem and seemed to idle ok. it did have a nasty backfire for the first few minutes. i rode about 5 miles and it seemed better. the power loss was sporatic. at times it was full on but then would bog down when throttled. i got caught in the rain with it the last time i rode. i wound up going through a pretty good frog strangler coming home from work monday. i am beginning to think i may have taken on some water into the fuel system somehow. hopefully this weekend i can pull the tank and check the hoses. i am going to replace the fuel lines and filters just to be safe. i also, had to sit in traffic for an extremely long time mon morn and noticed i was running very hot. so i may have lost a vacuum line. i know i did have to add some oil befroe i started in. again thanks for the info.
