Just bought a beautiful 1982 XJ1100J 2 days ago.. I already have 2 problems. Can anyone offer some advice.

1. My rear right turn signal will not come on. The front one illuminates but does not flash. I have cleaned the receiver for the bulb and the bulb is good. Also has a new battery. The left signal operates properly.

2. The shaft, only about once a day, slips or delays for a quick interval. Seems to have happened when it is just starting to ride for the day. The bike only has 8,400 miles on it.

Welcome to XS11 Denverboy! 1.Check and clean electrical plug-ins, then a dab of dialectric grease on pins before plugging back in. 2. The slip is most likely tranny not staying in gear under load. With some miles these are notorious for the famous jumping in and out of gear, 1st or 2nd or both are the culprit. Lots of info for fixing any and all problems on the XS's and XJ's and lots of knowledgeable folks here.

The turn signal is probably the ground wire. The rear signals use a wire from the "stalk" to the mount bolt behind the rubber grommet on the frame. this wire likes to break at the grommet. An easy fix is to run a wire from the frame a little forward of the mount back to the turn signal stalk.

Hi Denverboy & welcome.
the stock flasher unit needs the power draw from both signal bulbs (2 x 27 = 54Watts) in order to flash. Less draw won't cut it.
So your rear signal has a wiring problem. Most likely as Diver Ray sez, it's the ground not working.
And alas, you most likely have early onset first gear slippage which is not too bad of a fix but you have to get inside the beast to work the cure.

Welcome, congrats on your acquisition! The flasher problem has already been covered. The slipping/skipping could be the tranny, but unless the PO really flogged a lot then I would not suspect the tranny as much as possibly the driveshaft like you thought! A fellow Coloradoan named JERRY here on the site had his driveshaft splines get all torn up. The grease fitting on the driveshaft does NOTHING!!! You will need to take the final drive unit off separate from the driveshaft/swingarm to inspect the splines, and GREASE them properly, but there's a chance that they may already be fairly damaged if you are already experiencing skipping!

Sorry for the possible bad news, but fixing it is relatively easy, and parts from eBay are readily available, along with our local supplier Andreas Weiss!
