  • clutch lever (not handle) loose

i was going over my bike inspecting varioius things and noticed that where the clutch cable hooks onto the tiny lever behind the cover on the right hand side - the lever seems loose. Everything has been working just fine but there is quite a bit of play - not rotational play - you can move it up and down with your fingers. is this normal?

Mine does the same thing. Not that much, but enough to make you think about it. I have had no trouble with it so far.

      Hey Beech,

There shouldn't be that much play in it. Are you familiar with the proper technique for adjusting the free play, which should tighten the shaft so it won't wobble as much??

Unlock the nut, holding the center shaft with the phillips head, then back the lock nut off a 1/2 turn or so, then hold it still with the box wrench still on it, then turn the screwdriver in clockwise until the screw seats, the resistance will be much more than it was, then back it out a 1/4 turn, then relock the lock nut NOT allowing the screw to turn. Then it will be set at the right slack, and you'll probably find that it won't be so LOOSE!!!
Then readjust your slack at the handlebar.

I was wondering if the clutch adjustment tightened the wobble of your clutch shaft? I've noticed the same thing with mine...

it did not seem to have any affect on it at all. i'm not going to worry about it. topcat thought there should not be that much play, but maybe I described it as worse than it actually is. I don't think it's going to cause me any problems.
