  • '79 - '80 carb bodies... Interchangeable?

My cousin broke the float bowl towers in carb body #3 on a customer's 1980 XS1100. He does not want to try to repair the tower, and would rather buy a whole replacement body. There is one posted on Ebay for a '79. I know the jets from these two years are slightly different, but are the carb bodies interchangeable?
    Thanks for any input,
    Dave

heres a link to the parts Yamaha parts catalog, http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/parts/home.aspx

just type in the bikes and the parts you wanna compare, maybe open two windows with the two diff bikes and compare the part #'s, or someone on here that knows their carbs maybe able to tell you.

There are far more knowledgable folks her for sure. What I have gathered so far so that the 80 year had some early issues with the 79 carbs on them. If yours had those carbs, then they could be.

Differences I know to look for are the mixture screw being external on the early models or down inside the tunnel on the later models, and the carb vents being external tees above the fuel tees on the early models, or internal through a vent hole in the carb inlet bell on the later ones. Also, look at the pilot jet, is it covered with a screw? Or open. The earlier carbs had the pilot jet being fed from the main jet, later models it fed from the fuel bowl.

I am sure others will chime in with more details. While I have read of folks mix and matching diff year banks of carbs and year of motors, I have not heard of mixing diff year of carbs within the bank. That might make tuning a REAL challenge.

If it is a true 1980, it will NOT interchange with a 1979. You can change the complete SET of carbs, but not just one body. Sorry about that. The tower CAN be repaired with a pin drilled down for support, and stainless steel wire. If you do a search, you WILL find a few different ideas that have worked, and one or two you don't want to try.

Planedick and Cokeman both have (had) a set of 4 '80 carb bodies for sale.

If you don't need all 4, I need #1 carb body only, the one with the choke lever on it, and 3 is a little rough on mine but usable.

I would consider taking #1 if you don't need it.

Well, to take it one year further, are the 81s interchangeable with the 80s? I need a number 2 body for an 1981

80-81 parts will swap. The bowls on the 81 have a nipple on the bottom for a hose but the bowls will swap.
