  • Just got my first 11

I just bought a '82 XJ1100 that is sort of a basket case.
I have been riding a '82 XJ550 for 6 or so years now.
My first and only other bike was an '82 400 Special
I really must like this model and year!
I have not got the “XS ELEVEN HEAVEN” book yet, will do this soon.
Currently have my 11 stripped down to the frame with the intention of putting back on all the newly shined parts this spring. (Garage is not heated, NH is too cold still and I am still skiing )
Need to rebuild clutch, repaint the engine, reupholster the seat...
Engine with 13000 ran great, starts on the first push of the button when I started to strip her down, thats ALL I know as I have never had her move at all with the bad clutch/cable.
I am lookin forward to it getting warmer and getting her running!
Hopefull do not have a 1st/2nd gear issue to deal with

      Welcome

You've come to the right place, I'm new as well and this forum is a gold mine as you probably can tell.

...i wish I had more time to work on mine but the warm weather is coming this week and I won't be able to keep her down any longer!

Welcome to Channel 11!! Sounds like you got a very nice bike!

Strongly suggest a service manual is added to the list if you don't already have one. Gear issues seems hit or miss. Might be a pretty easy thing to do while you have the engine pulled anyway though, alot easier than on the bike anyway. JAT.

with only 13K, the clutch is probably the springs gone bad. Make sure you replace them with the "heavy duty" at least. A shop manual WILL help a lot, as will reading through the "tech tips" on some of the maintenance and modifications people have done. This site has been around quite a while, and someone here has been through what you will be going through. Look for the threads, using the "search" feature, and you should have the answer to any question you may come up with.
The XJ seems to loose First gear, and then second gear. You may want to read up on the fix, as it would be about one day with the engine and clutch already apart. Just a little "preventive maintenance".
          WELCOME TO THE SITE!!
