  • any suggestions, removing liner on a leaky tank.

Heres the deal, I am paying stupid tax on lining a gas tank.
I lined my rusty tank a couple years ago, only to realize once it had dried that I forgot to coat the pinholes that were quit large with some of the por-15. I was supposed to place the piece of fiberglass mat over the pinholes and paint some of the sealer over them.

Well when all was finished I noticed that the pin holes where not filled that the liner just ran out of them, and this particular sealer goes bad after about aday, (takes 5 days to cure) so needless to say it was too late by that time to seal the pin holes with it.

So I just tried jb weld, worked for alittle while, then this year I tried some gas tank fix from somewhere like permatex, it was a kit with two-part epoxy that you paint over fiberglass matt. worked for about 3 mo.

Well I was ready to reinstall my carbs after adding some new jets, and new carb holders, which I probably didnt need (which reminds me I need to start another thread about selling the used ones I coated with Plati-dip)
anyway, upon picking up the gas tank I noticed it was almost empty, and I know i had about 3 gal. left on the last ride. Oh NO!

Anyway heres the delema I went and bought some Acetone, the problem with it is that these pinholes are leaking and letting the acetone evaporate.

Anyone with any ideas to strip this liner, other that buying alot of acetone?
Which I'll probably have to do anyway, I only bought one quart and its almost gone.

any suggestions, removing liner on a leaky tank.

I'm not an expert on this, but I would let it air out real good and then have the pin holes welded or brazed up first. Then go about removing and replacing the sealer.
As for the gas tank filler hole expandable plug..... I picked one up at the hardware store in the plumbing isle.

Thanks Lucky, I thought of the welding thing, I may look for a welder but I dont know any who will weld on gas tanks. I've read a post about useing an inert gas inside the tank to make it possible to weld, we'll see if I can find a welder, and thanks for the answer on the exp. plug.

Fill the tank with nitrogen and you should be able to weld it.
