  • parts list, anyone wanna help?

    front and rear tires
    front and rear wheel bearings
    front and rear brakes
    fork seals
    fork brace
    inline fuel filters
    pod air filters
    exhaust
    oil and filter
    progressive springs
    pilot and main jets
    recover seat

I'm gonna blow most of my tax money on all that, I'm figuring about $1200. Is there anyone close by Wichita, KS that would be willing to help? I'll cook you dinner, (I make bad-a$$ed barbeque) and supply beer, hell I may even help pay for a motel room if I gotta. I have no garage and nearly no tools, the main thing i would like help with is jetting and tuning/synchronizing the carbs, putting the springs in and doing the fork seals. Everything else is pretty simple for me. I would be willing to bring the bike to someone's shop, house or garage if I need to.

      Hi BigDick,
I'm in Saskatoon SK and 1,400 miles ain't close, right?
If you can't get the bike in the house you do need a place to work on it.
Perhaps one of those tube-framed fabric carports just to keep the rain off?
A man needs tools. Unless you are a professional mechanic you don't need
appallingly expensive Snap-On tools. Sears tools are great but only if they are on at 1/2 price.
Look for farm store bargain socket & wrench sets.
Fork seals are no problem once you realize you don't want the old ones and so you can get medieval ripping them out.
The Special & the Standard fork seals ARE DIFFERENT. Be sure you get the right ones. Be real gentle inserting the new ones.

thanks fred, you brightened my day. I has the tools just they're 260 miles away in missouri (see other threads ><) I have a carport but it's only a roof, no walls. I will take your advice on the seals, thank you much.

I do all my work in a carport. It gets a bit chilly when the wind picks up and it's below 30F, but I just throw on my coveralls and go back inside a few times per hour. I keep all my tools in the basement, so trips inside to get more tools help to keep me warm.

              Adding to your list,

If you really want good brakes, you'll add Stainless Steel braided brake lines to your list. If you've checked out your master cylinders and know they are good and make good pressure, then okay, otherwise rebuild kits might be in order for them as well?

Also with old carbs, you'll need some float bowl gaskets, the old ones are probably quite shrunken/hardened, and may either break/tear, or just not seal well when reassembled with actual gas in them? As far as the jets, they don't necessarily need replacing, but usually just a good thorough cleaning. However, the Pilot jets are mor easily damaged when trying to remove, so it might be good to have replacements on hand. Oh duh....POD FILTERS and NEW EXHAUST, okay rejetting is probably in your future! Also have you checked the petcocks for proper functioning, non leaking? Rebuild kits might be in order for them as well depending on tests!?

I haven't rechecked to reread your previous posts, not sure the condition of the bike. Have you checked the pickup coil wires. Also, replacing the fuseblock would be a good thing to help reduce electrical gremlins.

Thanks TC I'll get the fancy lines and fuse fix too, I've had no trouble with the bike whatsoever, brakes are good, great powerband, great running, no complaints. I went to basic training and it's sat for 5-6 months, I found the exhaust was cracked, I have my income tax refund, so I figure a good spring tune-up is in order. I can put on my pod filters and exhaust too and get a bit more power at the same time, BONUS!

You will most definitely have to rejet and resynch your carbs with those other aftermarket parts BTDT.

I am close to Wichita. I work in Park City. I see you are at the base. We need to hook up some time. When the weather gets nice, I ride my XS to work every day.

I have some extra parts in the garage if you need something let me know. Nothin new though. I can show you how to save a hundred bucks on the pod filters too, if you are willing to get the EMGO cheapo knock off types.

I can also help you with the infamous Cherry Bomb Exhaust set up.

You planning on the Bob Jones Trip or the Meeting of the Minds? I think I am riding to MoM with Bigfoot, and it would be nice to have a riding companion to the Bob Jones ride.

Ohm, I can also help with mechanical stuff. I am a fair hand at it and have lots of tools left over from wrenching cages.

That'd be awesome Ivan, Like I said I'm fairly mechanically competent, I've just never worked on these bikes before and I've never done much with carbs, especially synching them.
