  • how many thank you does it take?

Got spark again on the old xs 1100. Found short in grey and orange wire next to the coils will replace wire and rewire . these wires have been in a fire and were visibly burnt to a crisp. now don't have to buy coils, advance and regulator from andreiss. oil spryed in cylinders has loosen the turning rate of motor. And with all the info on this site I have figured why fuel comes out the back of my carbs, theres no fire in the cylinder. Thank you xs 1100 now down to the carb tuning and a couple of other things including front brake master cylinder rear brake master cylinder and tuning of carbs clutch replacement or adjustment and finding which wire light the turn signals infalting the tires, finding additional turn signals, figuring why i have to run aluminum foil on my fuses in ,my fuse box just to have the neccessary circuitry, because my fuses keep blowing, then with a few minor adjustments from ther i'll probably have myself a running viable xs 1100. Thanks guys

That one sounds scary!! No wonder it's been in a fire. If you're up to it, TC has an updated fuse block that uses the spade-type fuses. Seems that the old glass fuse setup has been the cause for many an electrical problem on these bikes, and this fix seems to help.

Besides the mentioned cheap and very easy fix to the fuse block, heck even I did it and I ain't no sparky for sure!!, the fuel issue of fuel running out the back of the carbs is not due to no fire in the cylinders, its due to no float valve shut off when your carbs get full, which may itself cause you to be to rich to fire.

I would suggest pulling the carbs and checking your float valves. Again, not that hard, even I can do it, quite quickly now that I have done it ALOT getting them straightened out.

Continueing to run fuel out of your carbs has led to some BAD fires I read about on here. That and it can run into your cylinders and kill your oil causing bearing failures. Open your oil fill cap and smell your oil, smells like gas? replace it now. JMHO.

Just a quick tip for a tool that will eliminate going thru a gillion fuses trying to find a short.
Go to an auto parts store and buy a circuit breaker of suitable amps for your need. Solder or crimp connector wires to the breaker. On the other end of the wires, put a couple of alligator clips on em. Now you can put the breaker in place of the fuse and energize the system after you have worked on it. If you still have a short, the breaker will "pop". Unplug it and let it cool (most of them are thermal type breakers, they will reset themselves when they cool), look for the short again, fix it and test again. In the long run, this "tool" is cheaper than going thru a couple of boxes of fuses. Once you have fixed the short, do the conversion to the blade type fuses (easier to find and cheaper) and go on to the next problem, which there will be one.

I would never use aluminum foil and wrap the fuses with. That is just asking for trouble.A guy i knew in high school did that and his whole car caught fire.Auto carpet and plastic burn very quickly and stink also.I wish i was closer to you because i would personally install one of TC's fuse blocks.

            electrical woes

Do a search for this term and it will show what the conversion looks like , it was easy and my favorite part because it was cheap , maybe 15 bucks and probably the best money you could spend! Of course I was lucky and found a almost perfect wiring harness and rewired my whole 78

Webbcraft, what a great idea. :-)

You'll find where the wires melted was probably where the short was, repair the burnt wires first. I would never use alluminium foil for a fuse replacement for the the reasons youve just discovered.
How many of the fuse holders had foil attached?
