once again engine paint questions i couldn't find past threads on the subject, i think duplicolor was the choice i want to paint the jugs, head, and valve cover, should i use the high temp or the 500 degree ceramic
thanks
I always use the 1200F Duplicolor ceramic. The 500F should be ok for the engine, just not headers. There are two types, one that must be heat cured within a day or so, and one that doesn't matter how long you wait. Read the can label and buy the one that best suits your needs.
Your OVEN gets hotter than 500 degrees. An air cooled motor in summertime? I think at times, you'd be right at that limit on the cylinders and near the exhaust ports on the head. It's the same price for the 1200 as the 500 degree stuff.. why risk it? If you're taking the time to make it nice, how crappy would it be to have the stuff blister up and burn and look like crap?
As stated.. Duplicolor doesn't have the INTENSE burning vomit smell that VHT paint has when being heated.

Do they not make the 1200 degree paint in a gloss black? If not.. then the 500 degree paint would work fine for the valve cover. It won't get nearly the heat and temps the cooling fins do.

I use VHT SP-734, 900 Deg. Gloss Black caliper paint and it works great.
snip
Be sure to use VHT SP-11, brake cleaner and degreaser before painting, then prime with VHT SP-148, light grey primer.
• highly heat resistant, high gloss coating
• Works on both cast iron and aluminum brake components
• Withstands temperatures as high as 900 degrees
• Does not chip or crack
• Applies easily and dries quickly
snip
After cleaning and spraying run engine 3 minutes and stop for 10 minutes.
Run for 10 minutes and stop for 20 minutes.
Run 15 minutes and stop.
Take a ride for 30 minutes and park it. Now cured and ready for long rides. No smell after cure.
Did my CB450 Nighthawk engine that way and have great results.
Cleanliness is key to any paint on the engine, take care in this step.
