According to the exploded view in my service manual, it should be right there near the mirror mount.

In your latest picture, the clip is inside the plunger whole (the right side). Way down in there. Look at the exploded diagram. It shows everything....

Yes, you have to grub the boot out of there, then you can find the circlip.
Be careful you don't tear the boot up. I don't think the kit had a new one.

Yes, this is the end. Carefully pull off the rubber boot. Under/behind it, you will find a lot of nasty looking water/corrosion/dirt/cr@p. Blast it away, clean it off with dental picks and wooden sticks, etc, and you will eventually find the circlip. You'll want to spend a few bucks on a cheap set of circlip pliers with very long, slender arms to be able to get down in there beside the plunger.

ok.. got the boot off... can see the clip... thanx for the support.. i'm just a bit timid when it comes to things mechanical. gonna get some pliers from harbor freight today (4$). i just hope they are long and skinny enough.

I found the ones at HF are too short and too wide to reach in and get that clip off without a third hand.
I bought a set from Chacal over on XJbikes.com like this for $17.95 which work well for the MC's and getting the circlip out of some Carb Slides.

the hf pliers wouldn't do it. 3 bucks down the tubes.... i couldn't do it w/2 ice picks. i took it to a local mechanic and he had it out in 1 minute. so thanx for the help. now i'm just waiting on caliper rebuild kits...

just scared now....
so i got it all back together.... if i look at the threaded end should there be a solid peice there? i'm gonna feel real bad if i have to slink back to the mechanic to take it apart again....

Don't know what you are/are not seeing. Can't tell from your question.
Can't remember if the spring is visible from the end or not.
Assemble the lever to the unit and see if it operates.
If your assembly matches the diagram, put some fluid in it and with your finger over the outlet, start pumping. Let the air squeeze out and hopefully it will begin to spray fluid all over everything (which you have already covered with protective material).
Try the search function.
Search for "spooge"
Search for "bleeding and front"
Read a lot.
Ride a lot.
